Promoting micro-entreprise at the 2nd Tropical Fair of Caranavi
By Raimi Mendez - Communications, WV Bolivia on 7 Nov 2007
Between 4 and 6 October, Caranavi, Bolivia, hosted the 2nd Tropical Fair of the region. With stands of more than 60 microenterprises and/or associations, exhibitions included agriculture, food products, beverages, handicrafts and academic units or projects.
The event was organised by World Vision (Caranavi ADP, Chijchipani ADP, Taipiplaya ADP) and local governments with the purpose of giving to local producers an opportunity to show and sell their products, share their commercial experiences and create strategic alliances.
Besides organising the event, the ADP also promoted participation of the microenterprises and producers' associations it supports in the Economic Development area. Some of the productive initiatives fomented by the ADP are:
Macramé
Approximately 70 women from three areas in Caranavi are trained in macramé with the aid of a teacher paid by the ADP Caranavi (funded by WV USA). Each woman is responsible for buying her own materials and selling her products. They work according to orders they receive and the ADP supports them with raw material at a more accessible price.
Elsa, from the Jardín Botánico neighbourhood, has been in the macramé course for around 8 months. "As I have learned different techniques, I now teach my neighbors." Elsa is happy because "having learned this, we can stand out, we have more options towards the future."
Felicidad manufactures more handbags per month than her colleagues: "Every month, I make 12 handbags, all of them orders. And with my profits I can cover my children’s expenses. I am satisfied."
Association of Ecological Beekeepers of Taipiplaya and Santa Ana
The association is made up of 60 producers from the cantons of Taipiplaya and Santa Ana who for three years now have been joining hands to enhance the quality and quantity of their honey products.
"Before, we made honey in the way we thought was correct. The ADP Taipiplaya (funded by WV USA) has trained us, [teaching us] that beekeeping is very easy and that this activity can give us an income," says one of the association's members.
In their stand at the fair, the producers show the instruments they use and they explain the methodologies they learned in the training courses. Visitors approach the stand when they see it has interactive features and that they can open the honeycombs, use the combs to remove the honey and place it in the extractor.
AIPEAVE – Canton of Rosario Entre Ríos
The Association of Annatto Producers of Villa Exaltación AIPEAVE has grouped producers from the canton of Rosario Entre Ríos since 2001, giving them technical assistance and training.
Juan, a member of AIPEAVE, explains that although all parts of the annatto plant can be used, so far they have been most successful in exports of the ground leaves to Germany and the United States. Juan says that the association’s central objective is to add value to the product and be more competitive.
Besides the production and constant training, the members of AIPEAVE have also started to design their own machinery for separating grains: threshers and ventilators. The thresher breaks the peel around the grains and the rests fall on a metallic net that sieves the grains; the grains are then taken to the ventilator where air is used to separate the grains (heavy part) from the leaves and residues (light part).
The ADP Chijchipani (funded by WV USA) supports AIPEAVE with training and advertising materials.
